A friend just purchased a CPO 328xi sedan (I thought it was a 2011, but the build date is shown as 11/11) and has questions about defrosting the windows. As expected, neither the dealer or the owner’s manual are much help in this regard.

1) Rear window - should it really take 10 minutes to defrost? This is spring, and the temps are mild. The defrosting is even, just slow compared to her old Scion.

2) Front window - when the defrost function is activated, the A/C kicks in - natch. But even when the temp is set to cold, the air coming out of the defrost outlets is warm. Should it be?

When I first got my Mazda I thought something was wrong with the automatic climate control system, but once I read the manual I learned that it was working just like it was supposed to. Unfortunately, the level of detail in the BMW owner’s manual pales in comparison to that in the one for the Mazda, and I can’t tell if the system is working properly or if the climate control system is defective.

Thanks for your insight into this system.

Defroster also pulls moisture out of the car which is why the a/c is on, keeps the windows from fogging up. My wife’s nissan does it as well. Cold air doesn’t defrost very well in my experiences.

There may be someone who can explain it more technically but that’s how I understand it.

No. Should see lines running across within the 1st 15 seconds and it should clear up completely within 2-3 minutes except heavier frost or ice. Side mirrors should defrost extremely quickly.

Front window sounds wrong too. It should be really cold A/C blowing up and hitting you in the face.
